High-Fiber Foods for Gut Health: Could Your Favorite “Healthy” Foods Be Missing Fiber?

Are you falling short on dietary fiber because your "healthy" favorite foods lack this? You can still eat well while ensuring that your gut-friendly choices provide enough dietary fiber.

If this sounds familiar – congratulations! It means you’ve made a genuine attempt to ‘eat healthy.’ I bet you’ve bought more color foods, maybe you’re choosing whole foods over processed ones. Perhaps you have added fruit into your breakfast, tried out salads for lunch and even had a yoghurt during snack time. However, what about your digestion?

You might feel heavy after every meal, suffer from irregular bowel movements or be ravenous within minutes of sitting down to dinner. But no matter how hard you try to make yourself eat more high-fiber foods for gut health, nothing seems to work. What do these high-fiber foods even look like?

For me personally, I could always tell myself that my breakfast was healthy. My smoothies contained all kinds of vitamins and my bowls of salads looked absolutely wholesome. I’d watch those beautiful photos of a healthy breakfast on Instagram and assume that I had everything covered. However, none of them were packing in fiber.

Doesn’t mean these foods are bad though… So ‘healthy’ and high in fiber aren’t always two sides of the same coin… Here’s why fiber gets cool (and how you can use it to get healthier!) “Interacts” can sometimes seem too vague to be useful, but this is actually quite literal – our gut has all kinds of interactions with the things we consume.

For example, the dietary fibers found in many of the foods we eat get transported throughout our digestive tract, where they often serve as an energy source for some great gut-dwelling microbes. Because each of those different, fiber-rich foods offers different quantities and types of dietary fiber, diversity certainly comes into play here.

Instead of wondering if you’re eating healthfully, consider this alternative: “Where is the fiber on my plate?” Our goal with this guide was to help you decide what’s worth paying attention to while making sure your diet isn’t becoming a complicated list of rules about the foods you eat.

We’ll talk about which high-fiber foods should be on your radar, why certain foods we might expect are healthy aren't packing quite as many grams of fiber, etc. how to build a more gut-friendly diet, and how to increase fiber without turning your stomach into a balloon.

Think a big bowl of vegetables automatically means more fiber? Not always! Fiber content can vary quite a bit between foods and portions. Chia seeds are especially fiber-dense despite low in volume, while vegetables can still be an important part of a varied, gut-friendly diet.
