I’ve talked about this with many women with PCOS. They start doing things to eat “better” — eating better means eating less. Eating less can mean they’re eating fewer carbs, eating fewer foods that they enjoy, etc.

They work harder to maintain their portion sizes. They try walking, exercising, drinking water, all sorts of stuff… and then realize their weight isn’t budging. And that’s when they run into myo-inositol for PCOS weight loss.

Maybe it was one of my friends who told me that taking this supplement helped her shed those extra pounds off. Or maybe I heard from my sister’s friend that this supplement got rid of all her cravings.

Or maybe even from some random internet poster who said that taking this supplement fixed his/her insulin resistance. In no time at all, I fell head over heels with this supplement — the proverbial missing puzzle piece for my PCOS weight loss journey!

So let’s dive into how effective Myo-inositol really is as a magic PCOS weight-loss supplement?

Before we go further, I need to say upfront that this supplement isn’t magical by any stretch of imagination. And its effects on women with PCOS are far more nuanced than they are presented online.

There's some research showing that inositol has potentially useful effects on various metabolic and hormonal measures among women with PCOS but no clear evidence of its benefits for your weight – if any at all.

The most up-to-date international evidence-based guidelines about managing PCOS suggest that although there are some potential clinical benefits from inositol in terms of weight, this isn't strong enough to make recommendations about which form or dosage would be best for all individuals with PCOS.

So should we just stop taking myo-inositol? Well, no… The more useful question I usually get: Where can I fit this stuff into my larger PCOS nutrition/lifestyle picture? What will I really be able to expect from it? Let’s take a closer look into this!

Myo-inositol for PCOS weight loss supplement research and PCOS weight management
Let’s find out what the research really says about myo-inositol for PCOS.

What Is Myo-Inositol?

Myo-inositol is one form of a naturally occurring compound called inositol that plays roles in your cell signaling and your various metabolic processes. While there are many social references to myo-inositol as being a “B vitamin” online, this is inaccurate. 1

Myo-inositol isn’t technically a vitamin — your body produces it, and it’s also available in naturally occurring foods. That said, researchers have become interested in insulin signaling in people with PCOS.

But while PCOS is certainly a reproductive concern — involving issues like insulin resistance, altered glucose regulation, increased androgen (male hormone) levels, and challenges with weight management among others — I'm sure you're familiar by now that myo-inositol for PCOS weight loss has become an incredibly popular search.

And what's more, the idea that taking this supplement to enhance your insulin signaling may also help manage your weight sounds promising indeed! But of course, nothing about biology works on such a simple curve.

It’s not always as simple as “eat less.” Insulin resistance and excess weight can influence each other, making PCOS weight management feel more challenging. Myo-inositol may help with insulin resistance and then manage weight. Let's discuss it!

Does Myo-Inositol Help With Weight Loss?

This is where the answer becomes: Not quite yet. While there are promising research results from studies on humans, don’t expect a weight loss miracle anytime soon.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials did find an association between inositol supplementation and a small drop in BMI, but subgroup analyses suggested greater efficacy in those with PCOS and overweight/obesity, as well as for a specific form myo-inositol. But they also noted studies were quite different from one another, makes it harder to confidently combine their results effectivity.

This year’s systematic review included 30 randomized trials of over 2200 people that were conducted solely to provide input into this years’ (2023) international PCOS guideline.

While there was some positive data regarding inositol, the authors stated “Overall, we identified limited, inconclusive evidence about the efficacy of inositol on various anthropometric outcome measures.” And they concluded “We did not find consistent benefits for anthropometric outcomes with inositol treatment.” 2

So when someone asks: The role of myo-inositol for PCOS weight loss:

Can this supplement aid weight loss? Myo-inositol might be beneficial for losing weight.

But keep in mind that it's always best to lose weight through healthy eating and exercise, instead of taking supplements.

The evidence-based answer is:

So while this might help improve some metabolic outcomes in some women, we don’t have sufficient good quality evidence to consider it a reliable weight loss supplement. This is quite a bit more useful an answer than providing some arbitrary numbers of kilogram that could be lost.

One reason we’re studying myo-inositol is that it might have some insulin-sensitizing effects. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll lose all your fat!

Myo-inositol for PCOS may improve insulin sensitivity and support blood sugar balance and weight management.
Could better insulin sensitivity make PCOS weight management a little easier? Here’s what we know about myo-inositol.

Myo-Inositol and PCOS Weight Management Are Not the Same Thing

The difference between weight loss vs. weight management needs its own spotlight! Weight loss can be one of the many outcomes of weight management! 3 A woman with PCOS may want to:

  • Prevent gradual weight gain
  • Improve eating patterns
  • Support blood glucose regulation
  • Increase muscle mass
  • Improve fitness
  • Reduce waist circumference
  • Improve energy
  • Support menstrual health
  • Develop a sustainable relationship with food

So you don’t have to watch your scale drop dramatically for it to be worthwhile. And that’s why I prefer talking about myo-inositol & PCOS weight management instead of calling this one another ‘fat burner’. If you want to lose weight without eating less and extreme dieting, then you can read this my detailed guide I read especially for women who gain weight easily and struggling to lose it!

Myo-inositol may support healthier weight management in women with PCOS, especially when insulin resistance is part of the picture—but the research isn’t strong enough to call it a weight-loss supplement.

What About Myo-Inositol vs. D-Chiro-Inositol?

You might be familiar with PCOS supplements containing two types of inositol called myo- and D-chiro-inositol. These represent different types of inositol. Researchers have looked into them both separately and together, which contributes to their popularity as a supplement combo! 4

Consider speaking to your doctor before taking any sort of supplements, particularly if you’re taking medications or are planning on becoming pregnant, have diabetes, or have other health conditions.

Your supplement should support your plan—not become your plan.

Myo-Inositol for PCOS Weight Loss: The Honest Bottom Line

Does myo-Inositol aid in weight loss?

It could potentially do, but there's no data that suggests taking myo-Inositol will lead to weight loss. Several trials and meta-analyses of them suggested some degree of improvement on BMI or other metabolic parameters through inositol supplementation, however.

Therefore, as an approach I would consider the potential usefulness of myo-inositol for some women, but nothing more than that. This isn't a miracle pill for weight loss or an alternative to tailored PCOS treatment. It's also not meant to replace good nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices!

Your PCOS plan doesn’t have to be extreme to work for you. Sometimes all you need is this…finally making a routine that works for your PCOS (and your life). But combining this supplement with your balanced lifestyle works greater for you in PCOS. But consult with with your healthcare professional before starting!

Frequently asked questions

Results can vary from person to person. Studies of inositol in PCOS often assess outcomes over several weeks or months rather than immediately. Consistent use and an individualized approach are important to improve insulin resistance and in result weight.
By improving insulin resistance and metabolic health, inositol may help you experience improvements in appetite or cravings. However, evidence specifically for reducing cravings is limited, and it should not be considered a guaranteed effect.
Inositol is not primarily a weight-loss supplement. For women with PCOS, it may support their metabolic and reproductive health, which can indirectly make healthy weight management easier for them.
Inositol is not a targeted belly-fat treatment. However, by potentially supporting your insulin sensitivity and metabolic health, it may be useful as part of your overall PCOS weight-management approach.
No. Inositol should not replace your balanced diet or healthy lifestyle habits. For PCOS weight management, your sustainable eating pattern, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and appropriate medical care can all play important roles.
