Ever seen a person clear a plate, order a dessert, snack later, and maintain their same size — while you feel as if there are entirely different rules for your body? Maybe you may have heard comments like “You eat so much, how are you still so thin?”

Or you might have tried eating more meals, drinking shakes, having more rice or bread, or purposely eating calorie-rich foods, only to discover you have hardly gained any weight several weeks later. Soon enough, the question turns to “Why can’t I gain weight?” It can be quite frustrating.

We hear so much about losing weight that the struggle of gaining weight can go unnoticed. A woman trying to gain weight may be advised to “Just eat more,” as if food intake would be the solution to everything.

But the body is not a calculator which converts each bite into a weight. The weight of your body is influenced by hunger, occupation, genetics, digestion, absorption of nutrients, hormones, health issues, stress, sleeping, medicines and the composition of your diet.

Even the volume of food consumed by someone can differ from the food that replenishes energy the way it would be needed for weight gain. Another crucial point is not handled well: Increasing weight and providing your body with nourishment are not the same thing.

Weight can be gained by consuming unhealthy products like sweetened drinks, fast food and sweets. However, if you intend to achieve healthy weight gain in women, you need to also ensure you have proteins, carbs, fats, vitamins and minerals in your daily diet in order to support muscles, bones, hormones, immunity and everyday functioning.

If you want to know why can’t some women gain weight even when they eat more? Maybe you blame your metabolism — or to force yourself to consume huge portions of food. Let’s find out the truth about weight gain and discover seven wiser methods for attaining it.

Why Can’t I Gain Weight Even When I Eat More?

To start, "I eat a lot" doesn't mean the same as "I use up more energy than I take in." Our bodies use energy not only in physical activities but also in doing everything from breathing to keeping warm to pumping blood to digesting food to moving around throughout the day.

Each person will also have a different level of activity that is not related to exercising or any formal workouts. It may seem to someone that they eat a lot, but at some times, their intake of food may vary a lot from one day to the next.

One day:

Breakfast may be missed out on due to lack of appetite. Lunch may be small due to work/university. Dinner may be big, but not big enough to make up for this. Snacks may be sizeable, but they may not provide adequate energy. Walking, exercising or being on the go will increase energy expenditure.

Mood changes may cause decreased appetite. Symptoms of the digestive tract may lead to the discomfort of eating. That is why it is not always a matter of having a fast metabolism when people ask, “Why don’t I gain any weight?”

Genetics can influence your body build, appetite and how the body stores energy, while activity, food intake and health conditions also affect weight. The goal isn't to fight your body. It's to understand what your body needs.

7 Healthy Solutions If You Struggle to Gain Weight

1. Stop Thinking About “More Food”

This represents one of the greatest changes of mindset for favorable weight gain. If your appetite is low, eating large portions feels awful. You don't need a mountain of food on your plate. Instead, think about:

This is one of the greatest revolutions in mindset principle for healthy weight gain. If you have a small appetite, eating large portions can be painful. You don’t have to have a mountain of food on your plate. 1

Instead, try to think:

How do I improve the nutrition and energy content of my meals? As an example, when you eat oats, it is always better to cook oats with milk along with adding nuts, seeds, dried fruits, or even nut butter.

Instead of just eating toast, you may choose peanut butter, tahini, or cheese that will serve as a topping on your toast. In case of rice along with curry, it would be better to add protein and some fat along with rice. Eating fruits alone is not much recommended; however, it would be much better to eat fruits with yogurt and nuts.

Mayo Clinic and the NHS recommend the same kind of additions of calories and nutrients, such as nuts, seeds, cheese, milk, and nut butter for one who needs to increase weight without eating junk foods.

Useful foods for healthy weight gain

Being healthy does not mean being limited by some foodstuff. Regularly integrate the following foods. Healthy products for gaining weight without using junk food. Try to incorporate the following food into your diet:

  • Whole milk or whole fat yogurt
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Peanut or other nut butter
  • Avocado
  • Olive oil or all unsaturated oils
  • Beans

2. Make Protein Part of Your Weight-Gain Strategy

In case you are looking to put on weight, there is more than one target that you need to set your sights on. It may also interest you to build your muscles, become strong, and function well instead of adding extra body fat.

This is where protein comes into play. Foods that have proteins will have those necessary amino acids that your body needs for tissue growth and repair. Instead of wondering how to gain weight fast, you should be thinking about how to make your body stronger and better nourished. 2

This shift in thinking leads us to a completely different eating behavior. Simple protein additions. You don’t have to have a protein powder to prepare protein-rich meals:

3. Eat More Frequently If Large Meals Feel Impossible

There is a bit of information that is not really an information: Your stomach does not care about your objectives for weight gain. If you don’t have a good appetite, convincing yourself to eat a huge meal will only cause you discomfort.

What would work better in this case is spreading food over time. 3 According to NHS, it is advisable to eat many smaller meals throughout the day. Mayo Clinic gives a similar advice of consuming five to six meals every day eventually.

For example:

Breakfast → snack → lunch → snack → dinner → evening snack

If you want. The main thing is to find a comfortable meal frequency. Feeding yourself at the right time Some women don’t realize that they eat little during the day because they do not feel hungry. Then they get very hungry at night. In this case, waiting for hunger to strike is not the best way of eating.

A mild eating schedule might help them avoid under-eating.

4. Don't Let Drinks Steal Your Appetite

This statement is unusual because drinks that contain calories may be beneficial for gaining weight. Nevertheless, one must be careful with the timing. When large quantities of water, tea, coffee, or other beverages are consumed before meals, one might feel full and therefore eat less.

NHS suggests not drinking drinks before eating; Mayo Clinic seems to be on the same page, and says that people may feel full due to the fluids they consume. However, it doesn’t mean one must avoid drinking water.

Hydration is crucial. What one should do instead is realize what has been happening:

Do I feel full due to what I drank before meals? If the answer is yes, drinking less before having a meal might help. And while one is having it, one must choose a drink that will be high in calories and not empty.

For example:

Milk + Banana + Peanut butter + Oat will give a ton of nutrition, as compared to a soda.

The goal is not just calories but useful calories.

5. Strength Training Can Change What “Weight Gain” Looks Like

Currently, resistance training plays a crucial role in a healthy weight gain formula provided you are physically capable of exercising. Why? Because eating more without any stimuli for resistance does not send a proper "use the food to build muscle" message to your body.

Strength training is what provides that stimulus. It is not obligatory to use a complicated gym routine. Depending on your fitness level, you can do simple exercises such as:

  • Squats,
  • Lunges,
  • Glute bridges,
  • Wall push-ups,
  • Incline push-ups,
  • Resistance band exercises,
  • Bodyweight rows,
  • Llight dumbbell exercises.

By slowly increasing the resistance, you will help your muscles to develop. 4 Both the Mayo Clinic and the NHS have mentioned strength training as an essential part of the weight gain program aimed to gain muscles.

Do not make this mistake: if gaining weight is an issue for you, do not use: more food + more cardio + more workouts + less recovery at the same time. Doing so will make it even more difficult for you to achieve your energy balance. Movement is good, but exercising must be regarded in terms of nutrition and should work in concert with it.

6. Look Beyond Calories: Could Digestion or Absorption Be Part of the Story?

Now, the discussion becomes even more significant. It is quite possible that women find themselves struggling to gain or maintain weight. Problems in digestion, for example celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease, can affect nutrition and weight. 5

The other disorders related to sudden weight loss include hyperthyroidism and diabetes. This, however, does not imply that there is a medical cause in all thin women. Not at all. Some people are simply smaller than others yet remain fit.

But the issue of not being able to gain weight becomes serious if this has happened for the first time and is still unexplained. Take note of signs like the ones mentioned below:

  • Chronic diarrhea;
  • Frequent vomiting;
  • Diarrhea that persists;
  • Abdominal pain;
  • Bloating;
  • Nausea;
  • Loss of appetite;
  • Thirsty all the time;
  • Tremors;
  • Extreme tiredness;
  • Blood present in stool;
  • Loss of weight;
  • Changes in menstruation; and so on.

Your digestive system does not just bring food into your body. It is part of the process through which nutrients become available to your body. So if you're eating but consistently losing weight, don't simply keep adding more food indefinitely.

Find out why.

7. Stop Chasing “Fast Weight Gain”

Most people searching for “how to gain weight quickly” will usually get the answer involving mass-gainer powders and unproven supplements as well as exorbitant shakes and calorie-rich diets. However, healthy weight gain does not have to be excessive.

According to the NHS, healthy weight gain can take place gradually, involving an increase of 300-500 daily calories for adults who need to gain weight. Importantly, the NHS stresses a focus on healthy foods, not sweets, pastries, and sugary drinks.

Similarly, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advocates the use of nutritious food rather than using “miraculous” pills for weight gain purposes. When weighing what one can eat today to gain weight, what one should do instead is create a pattern for regular use.

One of the solutions is the “three anchors” way to approach diets. Make sure to involve three parts of the diet in a stable manner:

1. Protein anchor: eggs, yogurt, milk, chicken, fish, beans and lentils, or something else that is high in protein.
2. Carbohydrate anchor: rice, bread, oats, potatoes, bread, pasta, or something else that is rich in carbohydrates
3. Energy doodler: nuts, seeds, nut butter, cheese, avocado, or appropriate cooking oil.

After getting the three anchors, this creates a meal that isn't simply “high calorie.”
It is nutritionally complete.

What If You Eat a Lot but Still Don't Gain Weight?

Here is where a food-and-symptoms log proves surprisingly enlightening—not the kind that requires meticulous calorie counting and designates foods as “good” or “bad.” Rather, this is simply a log of your activities. For several days, take note of the following:

• The times you eat
• The meals you finish
• The duration of time between meals
• Any snacks
• The drinks you have consumed
• Your workouts
• Your appetite level
• Any digestive issues
• Your overall energy level

You may be surprised to discover something quite different from what you presume. For instance, you may find that you have very large dinners but hardly eat breakfast or lunch.

Why “Skinny” Doesn't Automatically Mean “Unhealthy”

This requires a separate section because women are frequently categorized. A woman who is thin by nature is not necessarily unhealthy. 6 A woman who is heavier by nature is not necessarily healthy. Nutrition is about more than just looks.

An individual can have 'normal' body weight and be poor in nutrition, while someone who is smaller by nature can be completely healthy. As the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states, heredity plays a major role in how someone looks.

Therefore, the question should not always be:

“How do I look heavier?”

It can be:

“Am I well nourished, healthy, and keeping in good shape?”

When Difficulty Gaining Weight Needs Medical Attention

If you have maintained a healthy weight all of your life, the cause of your inability to gain weight might not be health related. However, unexplained weight loss needs to be examined.

Mayo Clinic recommends that anyone experiencing weight loss without effort of more than 5% of their body weight over a period of 6 to 12 months see a physician. Likewise, NHS advises treatment for unexplained weight loss. A physician may investigate such factors as:

-Medical history
-Appetite
-Digestive symptoms
-Menstrual historyv
-Medication history
-Blood tests
-Thyroid function tests
-Nutrition
-Other illness

Frequently asked questions

It may feel like you're eating a lot, but your overall intake may still not consistently exceed what your body uses. Your meal timing, appetite, daily movement, genetics, food choices and certain health conditions can all play a role. Looking at your eating pattern over several days can reveal more than judging yourself by one large meal.
Possibly, but metabolism isn't the whole story. Your genetics, activity level, appetite and total food intake all contribute to your weight. Calling yourself someone with a “fast metabolism” can sometimes overlook other factors worth exploring.
Large meals aren't necessarily the answer. If your appetite is small, huge portions may leave you uncomfortable before you've eaten enough. Smaller, more frequent meals and adding nutritious, energy-dense ingredients such as nuts, seeds, nut butter, yogurt or cheese can make your eating enough easier.
Weight and strength don't always increase together. Simply adding calories doesn't automatically build muscle. Resistance training, adequate protein, sufficient overall energy and recovery all contribute to muscle development.
Not automatically. Many people can increase their nutritional intake through ordinary foods. A supplement may sometimes be useful when meeting nutritional needs through food is difficult, but unexplained difficulty maintaining weight should first be discussed with a healthcare professional.
